Is a ~90% hike probability the right Wednesday call — or is the room still 50/50?
Eric Balchunas flags a 90% vs 38% juxtaposition on rate-hike odds into the Fed meeting. Replies split between trusting economist/market hike pricing after a hot inflation print and a personal 50/50 that Wednesday can still go either way.
The read
Market/FedWatch-style hike pricing near ~90% has the better of the pre-meeting tape into Wednesday — especially with oil above $100 and the 10y tagging ~5%. The useful disagreement is not whether economists "won" a graphic; it is whether the remaining 50/50 personal odds (and any 38% counter-print in Balchunas's juxtaposition) are noise or a real hold/cut tail. Wednesday's statement settles the binary; the SEP and Warsh presser settle the path. Visible replies are light on primary data and heavy on stance.
State of play
Eric Balchunas posts a "crazy juxtaposition, 90% vs 38%" on hike odds into the Fed meeting, arguing economists "cannot afford another L" and "better pray they hike." Replies range from "they've been spot on for five years," to a claim that poll participation includes bad takes and personal odds are ~50/50 Wednesday, to notes that futures can price a different path than crowd vibes. Stakes: equity/duration discount rates into a meeting already near-certain on FedWatch (~92% on CNBC wires) under three-digit crude.
Fidelity note: top-replies — chart/image in the root post not OCR'd; numbers used are those stated in post text (90% vs 38%) plus reply claims. For You capture noted CME FedWatch ~87–90% and a Reuters economist poll 86/101 (~85%) expecting a hike — treat the 38% leg as Balchunas's stated counter-figure pending image confirmation.
The positions
Hike is the priced / consensus outcome; trust the ~90% side. @EricBalchunas [named] — 'crazy juxtaposition, 90% vs 38%' / economists 'better pray they hike' @adventurepath27 [pseudo] — 'They've been pretty spot on the past 5 years' @falcondigit [pseudo] — 'Markets pricing 90% while the crowd votes no change… My money's on the futures'
Wednesday is still closer to a coin flip / polls are noisy. @calculatedcopy [named] — 'assign the odds more like 50/50 where it could realistically go either way on Wednesday'; '5% of your poll said there would be a rate cut even though that is a 0% chance'
Expectations can flip fast under energy + growth tension. @neiljesani [named] — 'how quickly expectations can change when inflation, energy prices and economic growth are all pulling on the Fed at once'
Weight of the room
Balchunas is a named ETF/markets voice; the juxtaposition is the claim. calculatedcopy supplies the only explicit alternate probability. Anonymous/low-follower color is stance. No Fed principal in the thread. Engagement not evidence.

This is a crazy juxtaposition, 90% vs 38%. Economists cannot afford another L (given the Jets won on Sunday there will be nothing left to compare them too) = they better pray they hike.

@EricBalchunas Counterargument: 5% of your poll said there would be a rate cut even though that is a 0% chance.
Your poll includes participation of complete retards.
As for me personally I would assign the odds more like 50/50 where it could realistically go either way on Wednesday.

@EricBalchunas Markets pricing 90% while the crowd votes no change. One side is reading the data, the other is reading vibes. My money's on the futures. Economists better pray they're right this time.

@EricBalchunas Economists catching a Jets stray is probably the real leading indicator here.
More seriously, this is a good reminder of how quickly expectations can change when inflation, energy prices and economic growth are all pulling on the Fed at once.
